CLEVELAND, Ohio – A federal judge has scheduled a hearing next month to clarify what evidence both sides must share in the case against Thomas Sledge, one of two men accused in the 2024 killing of a U.S. Postal Service carrier in Warren.
In legal terms, the process of exchanging evidence and information before a trial is known as “discovery.” It’s a standard part of court proceedings designed to ensure both the prosecution and defense have access to relevant facts and evidence, preventing surprises and allowing for a fair trial.
U.S. District Judge Donald C. Nugent set the hearing for Aug. 13. Thomas Sledge’s legal team requested the hearing, stating they believe their understanding of the court’s June 9 discovery order differs from the government’s.
According to court documents, Sledge’s defense attorneys have asked for additional materials under the June 9 order, but prosecutors have not yet provided them. The defense argues that a hearing would be the most efficient way to resolve these disagreements and get clear instructions from the judge.
